So it’s that time of the year again! Royal Mail have announced that their prices are increasing once again.
As I am sure you are aware by now, but I used to work in the postage industry so these announcements always make my ears prick up.
If you are using stamps, thankfully the standard letter (DL/C5 under 100g) is only increasing by 1p for both 1st and 2nd class. If you haven’t already, it would be worthwhile looking into getting a franking machine. Just make sure that you are aware of all of the additional costs as they can add up to more than the rental of the machine on some occasions!
For those already using a franking machine, the costs are still increasing. The standard DL/C5 letter is increasing by 3p for 1st class and 4p for 2nd class. One great addition to a franking machine for a school is the ability to add a logo onto your mail. This make your post look professional and the recipient will know who it’s from.
One of the new (ish) initiatives out is Mailmark. Royal Mail offer a further discount for the franking machine users that also use Mailmark. This is because of the bar coding facility, it saves them time meaning that the benefits are passed back to the customer.
If you’re not sure if you are using Mailmark, this is what it looks like. On the left hand side you have the standard franking mark, the image on the left is the Mailmark image.
So with these increases in mind, I have given some tips to reduce your postage related costs:
1. Try to send as much as you can via email.
2. I’ve said this before, but don’t send anything to a business 1st class on a Friday because it won’t be opened or delivered until the Monday anyway! It may be slightly different if you are sending post to the parents and you want it to arrive over the weekend but never send anything 1st class on a Friday if you are happy for it to arrive the following week.
3. If you are being charged a fee to top your franking machine up with funds, top up as much as possible in one go to reduce the charge. Instead of topping up once a month, increase the amount and top up once a term/half term. This will reduce the charge incurred and will also save you time as it can be time consuming connecting it to the telephone line or computer.
